Makoto
Primitive EP
Apollo Records
Street: 10.06
Makoto = XXYYXX + Purity Ring
As soon as I played the first song on this album, I was presented with a drum instrumental that was, well, primitive (which only seems fitting since the name of the track was “Primitive”). The entire album has this sort of electronic tribal vibe to it and is almost entirely instrumental. One of the tracks that I preferred over the others was “Sapphire Eyes,” a down-tempo experimental electronic song with slowed-down male vocals that haunt the listener and relax the mind. Another that stood out was “A Spiritual Thing,” an up-tempo electronic drum instrumental with added jazz vibes thanks to the trumpet solos. Makoto definitely creates a chill vibe with his music that I enjoyed and will look out for in the future. –Julia Sachs
