Daniel Day Trio @ The Red Door
It was a freezing cold Saturday night. As we walked down 2nd south to the Red Door my step-brother and I discussed our lovable local government. I’m halfway through the phrase “Glenn Beck-loving sons of…” when our conversation is abruptly halted. There’s a wait to get inside. A line at a local CD release show? Once we got inside, the guy at the door said “find a spot, wherever you can.” The place was packed.

Joshua Payne Orchestra
The Joshua Payne Orchestra has been a part of Salt Lake City’s musical landscape for 10 years now, in one form or another. Over the last two years, they have really come into their own, garnering several consistent weekly gigs and a busy schedule. I asked him if it is alll a bit overwhelming, but he just laughed as if I had asked him something stupid like if he thinks guitar is cool, and he replies, “We’re lucky to have so much work.” But he certainly has paid his dues to get to this point. … read more

Top 5: Autolux
Being an Autolux fan takes patience. Their first LP, Future Perfect, was an underground staple after its release in 2004. Four years later they finally revealed the Kid A-esque “Audience No. 2” as a single, which served to satisfy my Autolove for a while. After two additional years of delays and more plays than I can count generated on their Myspace player, Transit Transit saw the light of day. … read more
Gaza
Jon Parkin, Tino Lucero, Mike Mason and Casey Hanson are four of the nicest guys you’ll meet in an anti-Jesus setting. Gaza is one of the most notorious bands to come out of Utah in years. While Gaza hoodies are keeping people all over the world warm, their albums are keeping parents all over the world scared. They are a band with a message, and they’ve stepped onto a platform in the Utah music scene which had been empty for years. … read more
Raunch Records
Raunch Records first opened its doors in 1984. Over the last decade, the yuppies have seemingly said, “Jump,” to which Sugarhouse has said, “How high?” So Brad Collins and company couldn’t have picked a better time to re-launch—or, re-Raunch. Look no further for punk/hardcore CDs, vinyl, apparel and skateboards. No Top 40, no Entertainment Weekly subscription offers at checkout, and no phonies—that’s Raunch, “a fucked up place to get some shit.” … read more
Heavy Metal Shop
Since 1987, The Heavy Metal Shop has been everything that stores like Hot Topic and FYE aren’t—legit, neighborly and stocked with great music, posters and apparel. If you ever want to talk music, take a minute and go chat with HMS owner Kevin Kirk. He’s an absolute fountain of rock/metal facts and anecdotes. Kirk has done something few shop owners have done: He’s created one of the most recognizable brands to come out of Salt Lake. … read more
CLC Band: No-Nation Orchestra
You’ve likely heard of at least one of the myriad of projects the members of the No-Nation Orchestra have been/are currently in. From Laserfang, to Thunderfist, to SLAJO, to Righteous Audio Werks, to the Night Sweats, to Mammoth and on and on—the No-Nation Orchestra have come together to create some ridiculously catchy, dancey, jammy, falsetto-ridden music that will get stuck in your head like a mnemonic device for at least three days after Craft Lake City. … read more
Local Reviews: Joshua Payne Orchestra
Zoom is going to be the record you put on the top of the pile, where your friends will be sure see it. Each jammy, heavily rhythmic, hooky tune is as good as or better than the last. You’ll find yourself humming melodies from “La La La” and “SLUG” as if they were lyric-less primary songs written for Miles Davis’ grandkids. … read more
