Agnostic Front, Naysayer, The Mongoloids @ Burt’s 09.13
I never think it’s a good idea to have a hardcore show at a bar. It’s not some condescending “principles” thing either, because everyone should get their rocks off how they want … it just doesn’t seem like a smart business move. Hardcore is a youth-oriented genre with lots of teenage fans, and it seems silly to eliminate such a large (paying!) segment from enjoying the music. … read more

Xibalba @ Foursquare Church 3.9.12 with Take Offense, Soul Search,...
Have you ever moshed at a church? Like, for-real moshed? Like, Sick of it All in Beavis and Butt-head’s living room moshed? Like the cover of Break Down the Walls moshed? Not talking no “I pogoed to Relient K at Christian Youth Camp then bounced to the woods to smoke weed and repress painful sexual experiences with trusted religious officials” kinda moshed. No I’m not talking about that. … read more
Zola Jesus, Talk Normal, Night Sweats @ Urban 02.27
I back the bejeezus out of everything Sacred Bones touches. One of the premier indie labels of recent memory for sure (Amen Dunes, Religious Knives … I’m getting elitist douchebag chills) and Russian-American songstress Zola Jesus ain’t no exception. … read more
A Plea for Purging @ Foursquare Church 03.14
Alright cyber warriors, I’ll try to contain this behemoth of a show review—not because I’m lazy, but because I know you’ve got a solid-booked day of scoring Craigslist dates and pirating music, and this show featured no fewer than thirty six bands (OK, so like…seven) on the bill. It was a lot to take in—My brain may have been running on some frazzled fumes, and I’m not discounting the occasional hunger hallucination. … read more
Rotting Out, Focused Minds, Speak Out and Fever Dreams @...
Truth be told, Focused Minds is what got me here. Midwest wolfpack. A split with Another Mistake. Serious Youth Crew, straight edge-bent. Color me “into it” and finger-point in my face. Last time they played here was at an acoustically wretched skatepark with a bunch of x-tian metalcore knuckledraggers. They didn’t complain. … read more
Brian Jonestown Massacre @ Urban Lounge 05.09
Brian Jonestown Massacre takes the stage. All nine, ten or eleven of them. It’s loud. Heavenly, but loud nonetheless. Three guitarists are bound to make them ears ring. Somehow, it’s hard to make sense of everything happening on the stage. Gill-stuffed with musicians, slumped, draped and/or crouched over their instruments with varying levels of concentration etched into their faces—it’s like some otherwordly ritual we’re interrupting. … read more
