The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water
Paramount Pictures
Release: 06.02
We all know SpongeBob Squarepants (Tom Kenny), the charismatic little yellow sponge without a care in the world. SpongeBob and his friends Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke), Squidward (Rodger Bumpass), Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown) and Sandy (Carolyn Lawrence) had not seen the big screen since 2004, when The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie hit theaters. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water is a stand-alone sequel to the original SpongeBob movie. Both films feature the T.V. series animated characters in the human world, but Sponge Out Of Water more realistically introduces the animated sea-creatures with the real-life beach scene in Savannah, Georgia. Sponge Out Of Water is absolutely stupid and absurd at times, but that is exactly why SpongeBob has become an iconic cartoon favorite. The film dynamic functions as small, trippy comedy bits that contribute to the overall plot—it begins with a relaxing day at the Krusty Krab in Bikini Bottom until disaster and utter apocalypse strikes: the secret formula disappears! Consequently, a few characters deviate from their usual roles on the original T.V. series. For example, SpongeBob and his arch-nemesis Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) voluntarily team-up to battle Burger-Beard the Pirate (Antonio Banderas), which conveys an overall moral lesson about working together. Travel the seven seas with SpongeBob and his friends and ride the waves of ridiculousness and genius that is Sponge Out Of Water. –Lizz Corrigan
