COUM Transmissions = Throbbing Gristle – Psychic TV
COUM Transmissions was Genesis P-Orridge’s performance art/music group in the late ‘60s/’70s before founding Throbbing Gristle. Dais Records has recently released a number of COUM’s recordings, most of which have never before seen the light of day. P-Orridge is possessed with the kind of voice, even in speaking, that is gentle and lilting yet has something mesmerizing about it, even when being interviewed about something like the “Ministry of Antisocial Insecurity” art experiment. This disc also includes a live performance opening for Hawkwind and poetry readings by COUM member Fizzy Paet and recordings in the field. Theories about media and individuality that later informed Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV were first developed in this work. P-Orridge’s career has been an ever-unfolding experiment in the evolution and control of personal identity, and Home Aged and other COUM recordings are a fascinating look at the early, embryonic phase of P-Orridge’s artistic genesis. –Stakerized!
