Beautiful Godzilla: Rebel Grrrls—Ovarian Psycos
Ovarian Psycos’ Maryann Aguirre, aka La Fingers, answers a phone somewhere in East LA with unrestrained enthusiasm as I state my name on the other end at the SLUG Headquarters in Salt Lake. Ovarian Psycos claim to organize and cycle “for the purpose of healing our communities physically, emotionally and spiritually, by addressing pertinent issues through cycling. ”As she explains her nickname, La Fingers, a result of being caught wagging her middle-finger on more than one occasion, I know I’m talking to the right person. … read more

How many times have you driven past this brick bank-to-rail and thought, “It would be rad if you could skate that”? Then all the reasons not to skate it come to mind: the curb, the bricks, the road it sits on, the height of the rail. Spots aren’t perfect. This is street skating. … read more
I Thought I Told Ya… I’m a Roughneck Souljah
Season 2, Episode 1 of “It’s a Rough Life” opens up with Johnny Roughneck, arguing with his “art director.” Flustered and in a sort of panic, Roughneck explains that the tour is a few days away, and they don’t even have any fucking flyers designed or printed. He knows he can’t do it all, but he feels the need to, sometimes—well, most of the time. He’s high-strung, opinionated, passionate and determined. Why is the flyer so damn important, what is this tour, what is Roughneck Hardware and, most importantly, who the fuck is this guy? … read more
Holland Redd: A Man, A Van and No Plan
I met Holland Redd when he was nine years old. We all crammed into the car and drove to the skate park, all the while teaching Holland new swear words and making him yell them at the drivers of the other cars. When we got to the skate park, it was evident that Holland wasn’t your typical lil’ buddy with a Wal-Mart board. He was already a full-fledged ripper. I’ve never been particularly good at skateboarding, but there is something humbling about skating with a 9-year-old who is better than you, and just about everyone else in the park. … read more
HVDD: Rollin Rebellion vs. Sirens of Steel 8.25
When I finally found my destination, walking into the old Food 4 Less that houses The Hive, headquarters for the Happy Valley Derby Darlins, I saw how they made themselves a nice little niche in the community. … read more
A Train Runs Through It: JCRD Welcomes Choice City to...
I knew relatively little about Choice City before heading north to watch them take on the Junction City Trainwrecks. Still a somewhat small league, they travel with two-thirds of their skaters. Knowing this now, I can see why Choice City runs such tight strategies. When it comes to travel teams, just having the time to practice with each other can make or break a winning streak. … read more
Summer Shovin’: Hot Wheelers vs Molly Morbids 08.11
Last Saturday the Derby Depot was packed as WRD’s Hot Wheelers warmed up on the track against Spanish Fork’s Happy Valley Derby Darlins’ Molly Morbids in shocking pink. As the fans continued to swarm in, tensions ran higher and higher. … read more
Beautiful Godzilla: My Chain Hits My Frame When I’m Bangin’...
I know that, as a cyclist, I’m supposed to love nature and spend the daylight hours outside mountain biking and hugging trees, but give me a fat stack of Tom Hanks movies and every season of 30 Rock on Netflix, and I’ll be happy never seeing the light of day. I only ride bikes ‘cause I hate walking, remember? That being said, movies ABOUT bikes are the cat’s pajamas, the bee’s knees, the fixie’s wooly pubes. … read more
Salty’s Summer Skate Series Scorches SLC
Salty Peaks has been keeping the skate community alive every summer with jam sessions and contests since they opened their doors in 1987, and melting asphalt and raging forest fires aren’t going to stop ‘em. This year’s summer-long venture––Salty’s Summer Skate Series––is approaching the final dates with a contest at Fairmont on Aug. 12 and the championship in Kearns on Sept. 9. … read more
