R.I.P. Michael E. Cline 1967-2012
Mike E. Cline was a really smart, generous and dynamic person. He had a way of making everyone feel good around him, or trying to. He could be incredibly respectful and polite … and rowdy and fun. Like a lot of people in our scene, he loved music—but Mike was really passionate about music, which made him so much fun to go to shows with. Riding in a car, he didn’t just listen to music in the background, he played it loud and sang along! … read more
I Thought I Told Ya… I’m a Roughneck Souljah
Season 2, Episode 1 of “It’s a Rough Life” opens up with Johnny Roughneck, arguing with his “art director.” Flustered and in a sort of panic, Roughneck explains that the tour is a few days away, and they don’t even have any fucking flyers designed or printed. He knows he can’t do it all, but he feels the need to, sometimes—well, most of the time. He’s high-strung, opinionated, passionate and determined. Why is the flyer so damn important, what is this tour, what is Roughneck Hardware and, most importantly, who the fuck is this guy? … read more
Holland Redd: A Man, A Van and No Plan
I met Holland Redd when he was nine years old. We all crammed into the car and drove to the skate park, all the while teaching Holland new swear words and making him yell them at the drivers of the other cars. When we got to the skate park, it was evident that Holland wasn’t your typical lil’ buddy with a Wal-Mart board. He was already a full-fledged ripper. I’ve never been particularly good at skateboarding, but there is something humbling about skating with a 9-year-old who is better than you, and just about everyone else in the park. … read more

A Train Runs Through It: JCRD Welcomes Choice City to...
I knew relatively little about Choice City before heading north to watch them take on the Junction City Trainwrecks. Still a somewhat small league, they travel with two-thirds of their skaters. Knowing this now, I can see why Choice City runs such tight strategies. When it comes to travel teams, just having the time to practice with each other can make or break a winning streak. … read more

Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival @ Golden Gate Park,...
My Saturday officially began with Portugal. The Man, who put on a fun, spunky show, perfect for the early afternoon. There were some sound issues at first, but they managed to power through and got everyone up and dancing for the first time that day. We left a bit early to head to MiM0SA, who turned out to be the biggest surprise of the weekend. The stage was packed. Last year, he would not have had half the size of that crowd, and he performed like a champ. He’s a local boy, and his mom was in the crowd, so it was pretty evident that he was throwing down everything he had, and it was excellent. … read more

Sure Beats Summer Camp: Final Thoughts on My First RollerCon
I’ve never been to summer camp, but I have watched the Parent Trap (1990’s Lohan edition) enough times to know that it can be some seriously life-changing shit. Though I was participating in RollerCon only as a spectator this year, it was still amazing to experience. … read more
