SLUG Magazine editorial internships provide nascent journalists with professional experience. From the nuts and bolts of an editorial department to writing and copy editing, SLUG editorial internships offer invaluable experience through an independent publication with roots in Utah’s music, arts, lifestyle and local events.
Intern Title: Editorial Intern
Department: Editorial
Reports to: Executive Editor, Junior Editor, Editorial Assistant
Commitment: One year, 10 hours/week
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Posting editorial content on SLUGMag.com.
Writing and publishing high-quality articles for SLUG on a consistent, monthly-minimum basis.
Copy editing editorial content, both during internship hours and as a part of SLUG’s volunteer copy editing team.
Fact-checking editorial content.
Entering changes to editorial content.
Assisting with the drafting and scheduling of SLUG‘s social media content.
Applying style guidelines for both text-body copy and online posting.
Compiling calendar dates for SLUG’s “Daily Calendar.”
Logging materials submitted for editorial coverage and organizing data thereof.
Distributing materials—digital or otherwise—for editorial coverage.
Brainstorming for editorial-related projects as needed.
Assisting with organizing information germane to volunteer contributors’ work.
Assisting with miscellaneous tasks related to the Editorial Department.
Assisting with the editing and posting of archive SLUG issue content.
QUALIFICATIONS
SLUG Magazine reader
Strong understanding of magazine principles and SLUG Magazine’s brand
Passion for Utah’s local scene and elevating Utah’s creative culture
Keen knowledge of music, arts, lifestyle and local events
Maintain SLUG Magazine’s core values of quality and transparency
Strong writer
Strong grammar and copy editing skills
Working knowledge of AP Style guidelines
Working knowledge of Adobe CS6, WordPress, SEO a plus
