Live At Bush Hall & Changeling EPs

For those of us unable to attend any of Moyet’s present (and limited, US-wise) shows, the first of these EPs offers a delicious—albeit too brief—bite of what’s likely on offer: two supreme tracks off her recent album, the minutes, plus two Yazoo classics. A simple, clean take of “When I Was Your Girl” reminds us what a dynamic live singer Moyet is, while a gorgeously delicate reading of “Filigree”—sans backing vocals—is not to be missed. “Nobody’s Diary” and a (musically) semi-disguised “Don’t Go” highlight her triumphant partnership with Guy Sigsworth and sound engineer Chris Elms. In addition to its title track, the second EP, Changeling, boasts three mixes of “Right As Rain,” including Sigsworth’s more experimental/downtempo—yet still rollicking—spin. But it is duo Terry Farley and Leo Zero’s two “Box Energy” mixes—especially the vocal one—that do the dance floor proud. –Dean O Hillis
