Jupe Jupe = They Came From Stars + Franz Ferdinand
This quartet from Seattle is somewhere between Metronomy and the more emotional side of Duran Duran. Their sound reflects old and new synth melodrama with a touch of glam from vocalist My Young, who writes completely infectious hooks—not because the melody is catchy, but because the words are stark and Young’s voice hollow, which complements the eerie tone throughout the album. Jupe Jupe’s presence, overall, is a bit too mellow for me, but it’s hard not to appreciate such a well-crafted album. –Justin Gallegos
